Tips and Articles

Did you know?
  • In California, when you use your cell phone to call 911, the call goes to the California Highway Patrol and not the area 911 dispatch.
  • Stroke is the major cause of disability in America.
  • When people have signs and symptoms of a stroke (blurred vision, slurred speech, one-sided weakness), they need to get treatment within three hours of their first symptoms.
  • Women usually have different symptoms of heart attack than men. They tend to have more upper back pain and extreme fatigue (not necessarily the classic signs like chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, and sweating).
  • If a friend or relative has a heart attack, it is recommended that you call 911 and DO NOT drive them to the emergency room yourself. This is because the victim could become unconscious and you would have to pull over to perform CPR on them.

Myths Facts
To stop a nosebleed, tip your head back. To stop a nosebleed, sit or stand up straight. Pinch your nose with thumb and forefinger for 10 minutes without stopping.
Remove a bee or wasp stinger with tweezers. Remove the stinger by scraping or brushing it off with a firm edge (like a credit card). Do NOT use tweezers or pinch the skin with your fingers because this may cause the venom to be injected into the victim.
Apply lotion or butter to a burn. Use a cool compress with water to relieve the pain. Do not use ice because this may injure the skin more.
